Thoughts from the Spring Game

Saturday, April 1st, 2006

Sorry, no April Foolery today. Forty Acres Fest was great as usual, not as hot as previous years. A perfect day for some spring football. (The fest warrants a post of its own but I’m too tired to write anymore. Or better yet, get it from Sidd)
My thoughts from the hour-long practice game:

  • QB: Both quarterbacks need to learn the new playbook and coordinate with the wide receivers better. Snead looked like the better passer and runner overall, but I’d like to see their poise in an actual game before picking one over the other.
  • RB: Melton got the most carries today. Jamaal Charles and Chris Ogbonnaya got most of the rest. The defense was all over the running backs today. Keep in mind this is one of the best defenses these guys will face all year.
  • OL: Picking up where we left off last year - these guys will be among the nation’s elite again.
  • TE: Finley is the man. He looks more like a wide receiver than a tight end. He took a high catch and held on to the ball even though his helmet popped off.
  • WR: I really wanted to see some long passes, but our secondary covered them too well. Shipley took a scary hit but looked like he was okay. He had a couple of good catches. With him, Sweed, Jones, Cosby, Hardy and Pittman we are loaded at this position.
  • DL: They stopped the run effectively all game long. Not sure who the playmakers will be next season.
  • LB: The big man everyone wanted to see, Kindle, was missing. Apparently he had some enrollment problems. Killebrew and Kelson rotated with Campbell, Muckelroy and some other new names.
  • Secondary: These guys were all over the place. The receivers and running backs didn’t have a chance to break out on too many big plays.
  • Special Teams: Greg Johnson seemed to be kicking everything, at least when I paid attention. Aaron Ross had some huge kickoff returns including a touchdown. I’d love to see some rotation in that spot, we have so many guys that could go all the way.

Overall: The new quarterbacks have the perfect platform to launch their college careers. The team is loaded with talent at every position, all it needs to do now is find some leadership.

Excellent post-game review. And I think you’ve asked the right question: Who will lead the team? If we can answer that, I’m sure UT can do very well next season.
